Phimosis is a health condition in which the prepuce (foreskin) covering the glans (head of the penis) is too tight to be retracted or pulled back. It is common in babies. Older children may also develop it because of scarring from a skin condition.
Young boys usually do not need any treatment for this condition unless they develop symptoms. However, as they grow up, the need for proper treatment is likely to increase.
There are two forms of phimosis—physiologic and pathologic. Physiologic phimosis refers to the condition in which a child is born with a tight foreskin. Easy retraction occurs as they grow old naturally. Pathologic phimosis means scarring-induced phimosis or infection in the penis or the foreskin.
Repeated urinary tract infections
Repeated rough handling of the foreskin
Sexually transmitted infections
Eczema (a skin condition that makes the skin dry, red, and itchy)
Psoriasis (another skin condition that makes skin flaky and red)
Soreness, itchiness, and odor
Redness and swelling
A buildup of thick fluid
Pain when urinating
Pain in the penis while erection
The doctor will take a full history, asking about any previous penis infection or injuries they might have had and also inquire about the impact of any symptoms on sexual activity. Doctor will do a physical examination by looking at the penis and foreskin, may order urine tests to check for urine infections or take a swab from the foreskin area to check for bacteria.
Phimosis that cannot be treated by daily retraction of foreskin, application of ointments etc., doctors may suggest circumcision, in which all or part of the foreskin is removed surgically. Other than the traditional open surgery, some of the advanced methods are:
Laser circumcision: In this procedure, a high-powered laser is used to peel the foreskin and the tip of the penis is freed, with this method FirstCure Health surgeons are able to achieve high precision.
ZSR Circumcision: FirstCure Health promotes the use of this surgery method as it is the most advanced method, quickest, painless and bloodless and ensures quick recovery. ZSR circumcision is a revolutionary procedure that uses a disposable surgical stapler which is a hand-held, sterile equipment with which the surgeon cuts, covers the skin edges with silicon ring and staples it to hold the skin together using the same device, unlike conventional circumcision.
It is a quick and minimally-invasive procedure where the surgeon cuts while applying clips (stitches) in circular rows near the incision line using the same device.
In the case of traditional circumcision, the doctor, at first, cuts the foreskin and then seals it using sutures. It takes time and is likely to be painful.
