What is Hysterectomy ?

Hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus. After surgery, you will no longer have menstrual periods and will not be able to become pregnant irrespective of the age. Hysterectomy may involve removal of uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and cervix depending on the patient condition and disease. This procedure is performed frequently among the age group of 40-50.

Reasons for this surgery include abnormal bleeding, uterine prolapse (which is a sliding of the uterus from its normal position into the vaginal canal), uterine fibroids (cause pain, bleeding, or other problems) and cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries cancer. Recovery usually takes four to six weeks, depending on the type of surgery you have.

The doctor may suggest an ultrasound, which may show the size of uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps or ovarian cysts. Tests to check for cancer, which could change your surgeon's approach to surgery these include:

Cervical cytology: It detects the presence of abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer

Endometrial biopsy: It detects abnormal cells in the uterine lining or endometrial cancer

Different kinds of hysterectomy

Our skilled doctors at the FirstCure doctor will discuss which type of hysterectomy is needed depending on your condition. This will determine if your fallopian tubes and/or ovaries need to be removed.

Total Hysterectomy: Removing the uterus and cervix, but leaving the ovaries.

TotalSupracervical Hysterectomy: Removing just the upper part of the uterus while leaving the cervix.

TotalTotal Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy: Removing the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes (salpingectomy) and ovaries (oophorectomy). If you haven't experienced menopause, removing the ovaries will start menopausal symptoms.

TotalRadical Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy: The removal of the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, the upper portion of the vagina and some surrounding tissue and lymph nodes. This type of hysterectomy is performed when cancer is involved.

The type of hysterectomy performed and the technique used to perform the procedure will be determined by our doctors, based upon your particular situation.

Open (Abdominal) Hysterectomy:
The uterus is removed through a six- to eight-inch-long incision in your abdomen. The incision is made either from your belly button to your pubic bone or across the top of your public hairline. This generally requires a longer hospital stay (two or three days) and a longer recovery time.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy:
A laparoscope (a thin tube with a video camera on the end) is inserted in the lower abdomen through a small incision in or near the belly button. Surgical tools are inserted through few other small incisions. Some people go home the same day or after one night in the hospital. Full recovery is shorter and less painful than an abdominal Hysterectomy.

Advantages of having a hysterectomy

Having a hysterectomy can help you live a more enjoyable life, especially if you suffer from constant pelvic pain or heavy and irregular bleeding. If you're at a higher risk for uterine cancer, a hysterectomy can lower this risk and potentially be life-saving.
