What is Vaginal Cyst?

Cysts happen when a gland or duct becomes clogged, causing liquid or air or another material trapped inside. Cysts cannot be found with a naked eye until they grow big, as big as an orange sometimes. Vaginal Cysts form on or along the inner lining of the vagina.

There are several different types of vaginal cysts:
  • Inclusion cysts: These are usually very small and located in the lower back of the vaginal wall.
  • Bartholin's gland cysts: These are fluid-filled cysts that form on Bartholin's glands.
  • Gartner's duct cysts: These occur when ducts in a developing embryo don't disappear after childbirth and later can form vaginal cysts.
  • Müllerian cysts: These are another common type of vaginal cyst that form from structures left behind when a baby develops.
  • Clogged gland or duct

    Trauma to the vaginal walls
    Bacteria buildup

    Typically no symptoms
Small lump protruding from the wall of the vagina
    Pain or discomfort during intercourse
    Infection and pain

Gynaecologist will review your medical history and ask about your symptoms and suggest additional tests to rule out other conditions. Tests may include:

A biopsy of a tissue sample from the cyst.

Tests on the secretions from the vagina or cervix to determine if a sexually transmitted infection (STI) is present.

MRI scan, CT scan, or ultrasound to see detailed images of the cyst.

Your doctor will recommend treatment to shrink or remove the cyst if it doesn’t go away on its own or if it grows larger. Other than medication, the doctor may advice Sitz baths in warm water few times a day which may help the cyst to burst and drain out.

Depending upon the size of cysts and infection therein, there may be a need to surgically drain the contents of the cyst by making a small cut in the cyst. This is done under the influence of anesthesia.
